There are many types of eye infection that you or your child may get. Sties can be very painful and look really ugly. A sty is caused when an eyelash follicle becomes inflamed and infected. A white, pus-filled bump can form inside the eyelid or on the very edge of the eyelid.
Do not try to expel the fluid or use pressure on it. Encourage children to keep their hands and fingers away from the eye area. Discourage any rubbing of the eyes. Keep the hands clean and wash carefully and often to avoid spreading the infection.
An old wives’ remedy that has been reported to be successful is to rub a gold ring gently on the eyelid at the first sign of this eye infection. This seems pretty far-fetched but I have heard it recommended several times as being effective in preventing the development of a sty. If you want to try this rather strange method, I would suggest cleaning the ring in rubbing alcohol before putting it on the eye. Always be extremely gentle when touching the eye area.
A folk remedy that may shrink the swelling from this eye infection uses raw potato. Grate or scrape the inside of a raw potato and place the scrapings on the eyelid in a clean piece of cloth. Replace with fresh scrapings a few times and the eye infection should subside after a few hours of this treatment.
Another soothing home remedy is to prepare a solution of chamomile with a teaspoon of the herb in a half cup of boiling water. Let the chamomile steep for at least five minutes. Strain the brew and while it is still warm use a cloth dampened with the tea as a compress. Repeat as needed until the eye infection subsides and the sty goes away.
It used to be said that sties could result from eye strain and reading too much but this is not logical. The best prevention for this eye infection is to keep the eye area clean and keep hands and fingers out of the eyes.
