What is acne?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin. It is the most common skin disorder and can affect anyone. It is characterized by small red bumps or pustules that most commonly occur on the face, but can be found anywhere on the body. It is caused by sebum which is the oil produced in the sebaceous gland. When the sebum mixes with dead skin cells, the skin pores become clogged. The acne will form where the clogged skin pore is.
How to treat acne?
There are many different treatments for acne. Which one you use depends on if you have mild, moderate or severe acne.
How to treat mild acne?
To treat mild acne, you will want to use an over-the-counter acne product that contains benzoyl peroxide. The benzoyl peroxide treats the acne by killing the bacteria that causes it. It also will reduce any inflammation that was caused by the acne. Benzoyl peroxide also helps prevent mild acne by helping keep the pores unclogged.
How to treat moderate acne?
Some people with moderate acne will find relief using benzoyl peroxide, others will need something a little stronger. Salicylic acid and sulfur are the most common products that are used to treat moderate acne. They both work the same way to get rid of acne. They work by shedding the dead skin cells and drying the excess sebum. This will prevent the pores from becoming clogged. Alcohol and acetone are also commonly used to treat moderate acne. They are usually found together in the same product and work hand-in-hand. The alcohol kills the bacteria and the acetone dries up the excess sebum. All four of these treatments come with some mild side effects so if you have sensitive skin you should not use them.

How to treat severe acne?
Severe acne will need to be treated with a prescription medication. You doctor will most likely prescribe a topical retinoid cream. The cream treats the acne by rapidly exfoliating the skin and reducing the production of sebum. Most retinoid creams will also contain benzoyl peroxide to help kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation.
How to treat hormonal acne?
Hormonal acne can use the same treatment as either mild, moderate or severe acne. What you use depends on your severity. However, if you are a woman that experiences severe hormonal acne, you could control it by taking an oral contraceptive that your doctor prescribes.
