The Common Types of Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in one or more joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis, but there are 5 types that are more common than most. They are osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Gout , and Infectious Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is nicknamed wear and tear arthritis. The main cause of osteoarthritis is age and long term use of the joints resulting in wearing away of the cartilage. Osteoarthritis generally affects mostly the hips, back, knees, and fingers. Medications to manage pain are prescribed for this disease, as well as observing a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. More women than men have this type of arthritis. For people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, the body attacks the synovial membranes, which are found surrounding the joints. This results in cartilage and joints becoming damaged and results in scar tissue forming in the joints. This scarring causes joint swelling, stiffness, and pain. The person can also experience weight loss, fatigue, and even anemia. Medication and following a healthy diet and lifestyle help to manage this type of arthritis.

Psoriatic Arthritis is a type of arthritis that often affects people who have psoriasis. It is an inflammatory form of arthritis but the cause remains unknown. This form of the disease is often very mild, with only one or two joints being affected. The spine is most often the location of Psoriatic Arthritis. Anti-inflammatory drugs, along with following a healthy eating and exercise regimen are prescribed to deal with this type of arthritis.
