The Different Types of Anemia

Anemia is the most common blood disorder in the world. Millions of people suffer from it on a daily basis and each day, more people are diagnosed with the disorder. It is caused by a decreased amount of healthy red blood cells and can cause the body to have an insufficient amount of oxygen. There are many different types of anemia, each with their own cause, symptoms and treatment.

Iron deficiency if the most common type of anemia. It is caused by a lack of iron in the body. When the body does not have enough iron, it cannot produce enough red blood cells and hemoglobin. Therefore, there will be a reduced amount of healthy red blood cells and not enough to transport oxygen to the body’s organs. The organs will not be able to function properly. Treating iron deficiency anemia is usually quite simple. If you take an iron supplement or change your diet to include more iron-rich foods, chances are the anemia will disappear. In some cases, the iron deficiency anemia is caused by blood loss. If it is severe enough, your doctor may suggest a blood transfusion, but this is very rare with this type of anemia.

Another common type of anemia is sickle cell. It is caused by misshapen red blood cells that deteriorate quickly. The sickle, or crescent, shaped cells deconstruct at a rapid rate and the body in unable to produce enough healthy red blood cells to allow the body to function properly. Another problem that is caused by this type of anemia is a blockage in the blood vessels. Due to the odd shape, the cells are unable to flow freely through the blood vessels. They will then be stuck in the blood vessels and continue to die at a rapid rate. The build-up of dead red blood cells in the vessel will make it difficult for the blood to flow to the body’s organs and can cause many problems. Sickle cell anemia has no cure, but there are some treatment options available that can reduce the symptoms.

Hemolytic is another type of anemia. This is caused by hemolysis, the rapid destruction of red blood cells. The body will be unable to produce enough healthy red blood cells fast enough to keep up with the destruction. This will cause a lack of oxygen and can lead to other health problems. Hemolytic anemia is a severe type of anemia and needs to be treated as soon as possible

Other types of anemia include vitamin deficiency, chronic disease anemia and thalassemia. Although they can happen quite often, they are highly treatable and symptoms will go away once treatment is given. Even though there are many types of anemia, they all cause similar symptoms but need to be handled in different ways. When you experience symptoms you should seek medical attention to determine the type of anemia that you have so that you can get the treatment that is best for you.
