Pink Eye is caused by viral and bacterial infections. It is mostly caused by an adenovirus which also affects the respiratory tract and causes upper respiratory infection and a sore throat. The virus inflames the mucous membranes that line the eyelid and eye surface. As a result the conjunctiva becomes red and swollen. The white of the eye becomes red and there is an itchiness and burning sensation in the eyes.
The eyelids too become swollen and the eyes become watery. A thick whitish discharge often forms a crust over the eyelids. There can also be swelling and tenderness in the areas in front of the ears. This infection is very contagious and care should be taken not to use the infected person’s personal articles.
Bacterial pinkeye causes more drainage from the eyes and it makes the eyelashes stick together. There is extensive pain and swelling of the upper eyelid. Both the infections can go away in seven to ten day’s time but sometimes they can continue for a longer period and while they last, they cause excessive discomfort.
