Lung Tonic for Emphysema

Emphysema

The leading cause of emphysema is smoking.  The damage to the lungs in emphysema cannot be repaired.  If you have been diagnosed with emphysema you must stop smoking immediately and avoid second-hand smoke whenever possible.

You should begin building up your system with a wholesome diet which emphasizes fruits and vegetables.  Eating onion and garlic daily has medicinal value.  Taking a good multivitamin and perhaps additional supplements of vitamin C and vitamin E can be very helpful.  Smoking destroys the B complex vitamins, so if you have not been able to quit smoking, a B complex supplement would be advised.

Mild Exercise

Mild exercise, such as walking, is an important part of building up the system.  Breathing exercises emphasizing abdominal breathing and pursed lip breathing should be done each day.  If you do not use the lung capacity that you still have you can lose more function over time. Protect your lungs from very cold weather by wrapping a scarf around the nose and mouth when outdoors.  Avoid toxic fumes from smoke or chemicals which can cause further lung damage.

Lung Tonic Home Remedy

The herbs that  act to soothe the bronchial passages or have expectorant properties can be used in an infusion or tea.  Mullein is an herb that has beneficial effects to the respiratory system and should form the basis of your infusion.  Comfrey root, angelica root, thyme, white horehound and aniseed can be mixed with the mullein.  Use a tablespoon of the herb mixture boiled in one cup water and steeped for 10 to 15 minutes.  Cool, strain and drink one to two times daily.

Humidifinder

If indoor conditions are very dry this can exacerbate emphysema symptoms.  Use a humidifier’  You can also boil one lemon cut into quarters, a handful of lemon grass and a handful or eucalyptus leaves in a pan for 20 minutes.  Pour this aromatic inhalant into a bowl, and breathe it in with a towel covering your head to hold in the steam.

Living with emphysema is a challenge.  Working to keep your lungs functioning to their best capacity keeps emphysema at bay.
