Heartburn during Pregnancy

It is a little more difficult to relieve heartburn during pregnancy. Though there are a number of remedies you cannot use while pregnant, there are still plenty of things you can do to prevent and relieve the irritating symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux.

Avoid foods that are spicy, acidic or high in fat.  These foods include fried foods, citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, chocolate, chili, tomatoes or tomato based sauces and soups, and any foods that are heavily spiced or covered in hot sauce.  Instead, try eating foods that have low or no risk of causing heartburn during pregnancy.  This includes foods such as apples, bananas, pears, broccoli, carrots, green beans, baked potatoes, meats that are broiled, boiled, or grilled without the addition of spicy sauces or heavy seasonings.  Eat smaller portions at meals to avoid making the stomach overfull.  Chew food thoroughly, this helps aid the digestion process by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach needs to produce to digest the food.

Stay Away From Drinks

Stay away from drinks like orange juice, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, lemonade, coffee, alcohol, soda, or any beverage that contains caffeine or carbonation.  Instead try drinking caffeine free teas, apple juice, mineral waters, fresh fruit smoothies made with apple juice, yogurt, banana and pears.  Apple and banana can actually help soothe and relieve heartburn symptoms.  Be cautious and read all labels carefully when selecting herbal teas, while they can be good to help relieve acid reflux symptoms, there are many herbs such as slippery elm and marshmallow root that you should not use while pregnant.  Do drink plenty of water throughout the day.  It is best to drink fluids in between meals rather than with meals to avoid overfilling your stomach.  The water helps by washing acid back down to your stomach where it belong and increases saliva production which neutralizes the acid.

Lose Fiting Cloths

As your belly grows larger, so should your clothes.  Wear loose fitting garments that have plenty of breathing room.  Do not try to squeeze into clothes that do not fit anymore.  Tight fitting clothing, especially pants, can put added pressure on your stomach and cause heartburn during pregnancy.
