Sinus headaches are caused by the inflammation of the sinuses which are hollow air filled cavities around the nose, eyes and cheeks. These cavities get blocked due to congestion and inflammation caused by cold or flu or other respiratory infections and allergies.
The sinuses filter the air that we breathe before allowing it to pass on to the lungs through the nasal passages. When the sinuses get inflamed the areas get blocked and the mucous is unable to drain and it gets trapped inside which provides a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, viruses and fungus which cause infection.
Sinus headaches often begin in the morning. A dull and throbbing pain encompasses the front of the head and the face. This pain intensifies causing deep discomfort. The face becomes tender to the touch and a specific pressure which causes immense pain builds up in the area of the face and head.
Other symptoms include postnasal drip, sore throat, fever, weakness and swollen nasal passages.
