HOME REMEDIES FOR BODY ODOR AND PERSPIRATION
Bookmark and Share

Body odor is the term referred to any kind of unpleasant smell associated with an individual’s body. The condition that causes body odor is hyperhidrosis. Perspiration is the part of the cooling process of body. Water on the skin’s surface evaporates and gives a cooling sensation to the body. Perspiration or sweat doesn’t cause odor but the bacteria that gets accumulated on the skin releases unpleasant smelling chemicals. The body odor is strongly associated with the emission from our sweat glands. The armpits and genitals perspire more as compare to any other parts of the body. The use of deodorants worsens the condition as it contains various toxic chemicals and products of heavy metals like aluminium. The sweat glands are responsible for the elimination of toxic matter from the body.

Causes of Body Odor

There are various causes of perspiration and ultimately body odor

  • Any prolonged and chronic disease
  • Use of drugs
  • Certain foods and beverages
  • Anxiety
  • Menopause in women
  • Over secretion of hormones
  • Constipation
Home Remedies for Body Odor

Take 500 mg of wheat grass daily on an empty stomach with a glass of water. The chlorophyll in it will reduce the body odor and is natural body odor remedy.

Application of baking soda to the armpits and feet will minimize the body odor and is good home remedy for body odor.

Use alcohol or white vinegar to wash the armpits.

Put some drops of rose water in the bathtub before taking bath. No deodorant is required after the bath. This is a very simple and one of the effective home remedies for body odor.

Apple cider vinegar reduces the pH of the skin and eliminates armpit odor when used in place of deodorant. Good Home Remedy for Body Odor.

Another effective body odor treatment that it’s always better to take 3 showers a day in summers when sweating is more.

Take Juice from about two dozen radishes and add 1/4 teaspoon of glycerine to it and put in a spray-top bottle. Use this as an underarm deodorant. This is also useful home remedy for body odor.

Instead of using deodorant use baby powder or talc in the areas with high perspiration.

Mix some baking soda with lemon juice and rub this mixture on underarms. This is a useful natural remedy for body odor.

Tea tree is an antibacterial herb. Make a deodorant by mixing two drops of the essential oil and one ounce of water.

In 30 mm of water put 10 drops of the essential oil and apply this on the underarms to reduce body odor. This is another effective natural remedy for body odor.

Place some white vinegar on a cotton ball and apply to the underarms. The vinegar smell vanish in minutes and you should be smell-free whole day. This body odor remedy is one of the best home remedies for body odor.

Turnip juice reduces underarm odor for up to 10 hours. Grate a turnip; squeeze the grated pieces and rub the juice on the armpits.

Drinking a cup of sage tea daily will reduce the activity of sweat glands and ultimately will minimize the odor and acts as body odor remedy.

Blend tomato juice with fresh sage leaves and apply on the area for 10 minutes before bathing. This is also a very good body odor treatment.

White vinegar is also helpful. Instead of using deodorant apply white vinegar with a cotton ball on the areas. This will keep the body smell free whole day. It is a one of the best body odor cure.

For a great underarm deodorant
Mix equal amounts of extra virgin coconut oil,
cornstarch, and baking soda to make a paste. This will be softer at room temperature, but a solid in colder temperature, mix as suits you best. It worked well for me, it has a wonderful, mild coconut smell.

Very interesting article! For those asking-although I have not tried all of the remedies suggested here, I do have to say that straight tea tree oil directly applied to the armpit for strong odor or, for leaser ordor a mixture of witch hazel and tea tree oil works great! You can find tea tree oil inexpensively at pharmacies or even Walmart in the herbal section. Just remember a little tea tree oil goes a long way ;)

I persperate very heavily under my armpits just by sitting in class, and it's such a pain in the neck trying to hide it throughout the day. Thankfully it doesn't smell though! I've tried the clinical strength deodorant and it doesn't make much of a difference for me. It's not like I'm overweight and get sweaty and out of breath easily. I do smoke though, do you think that maybe that has something to do with it? What can I do to stop the niagara falls?
#6 - Eliza - 10/14/2008 - 11:57
hello well i have this sweat issue which i think could be hyperhidrosis, the issue is not the odor, nut the amount of sweat i perspire. five minutes after i put some deodorant or antitranspirant on i discover this huge damp rings around my armpits, i dont know what to do! i wear a sweater to cover it , but it gets wet as well! HELP ME!! Im desperate!
#7 - ariana - 10/14/2008 - 15:14
I perspire so heavily even after taking a bath but there's no odor on the first few hours because I applied anti-perspirants and anti-deodorants, but it starts spreading bad odor after few more hours. It's embarrassing! What will I do? Please help me.

i sweat a lot in the class and it smells very bad please give me the right solution,i dont hav any bad haits.plss tell me the solution.
#12 - arun - 12/26/2008 - 06:43
I don't know how to stop sweating, there are over the counter drops that you can put under your arms at night the wash off the next day. Ask your doctor, this reduces it and it only needs to be used a couple times a week. Also, wear antipersperant during the day.
For odour, if you want to get rid of the smell throughout the day, bring a couple cotton balls and rubbing alcohol in a very small container. Dab your underarms with the alcohol and it kills the bacteria and reduces or kills the smell. If you don't carry a purse, snag a vinegar packet from the cafeteria and use that instead of alcohol.

Shower with anti-bacterial body foam and apply pure aloe vera gel to the armpits. This is the simplest of way of reducing armpit odor.
#15 - Lina - 03/27/2009 - 06:27
:-) ok guys here what to do really wash ur skin good and scrub with 2 ripe lime its a folk thing here ppl do it all the time wash ur under arms with it
#16 - caribbean woman - 03/27/2009 - 11:18
you can soak in the bath with black tea.. take about 6 tea bags and let them do their thing in the bath(make sure it is on the hot side when starting out).. squeeze them here and there to make sure they are getting all the stuff out. this works wonders on feet too. this helps with odors not on the sweating though. also helps on face
#17 - ~P - 04/09/2009 - 01:14
To those with body odor..i too have and and still in the process of finding the right one to stop sweating.
First wash the armpit of your clothes well with soap..or soak it first in detergent powder then wash well..because the bacteria can still be there.
While armpit is damp after shower..rub baking soda.
And avoid using deodorants with perfume. Use nonperfumed deodorant or the unscented one. Mitchum unscented works well though it darkens the skin a bit
#18 - in search - 04/12/2009 - 09:26
guys use DRICLOR it can be bought at your local drug store. very good for stopping the sweating and the odor bu tit can darken the skin a bit. hope this helps.

To anyone who knows how to make a webpage..pls make one and include my suggestion . I have suffered body odor for years even when I was younger..and I read somewhere, people loosing jobs..unable to have friends and even commit suicide. I pity and feel sorry for them though I have suffered a lot of humiliation too thats why I want to help.
Anyway.... my advices are:

1.stay away from spices and food that contribute to body odor. Have a healthy diet like fruits and veggies and lots of water.
2. When you take a bath, lather your loofa or towelette with a good bacterial soap and scrub well your armpits to get left over deodorant..sweat and bacteria.
3. Wash your shirts os clothes well. Concentrate on the armpit. You acn soak it first in dtergebt powder and wash. I emphasize handwashing the armpit area. Because if the armpit area is not washed well...it can lead to body odor.
REMEDIES I'VE TRIED THAT WORKED WELL:
1. After bath wet your armpits and scrub baking soda. This works well. it doesn't stop the sweating but you won't smell.
2. You could also try putting Listerine on your armpit as substitute for deodorant. Put some on a cotton ball and scrub.
3. As substitute for deodorant.. you can use GIN ....yes... an alcoholc drink as deodorant. The scent is only temporary . I read somewhere that Vodka can be used as well but I perspire after I tried it though i didn't smell. These is what I use now and what I intend to use forever. Its amazing.
These three works well...its up to you to choose what works for you.

By the way keep a stock to carry with you at work or school in case you wann freshen up. But these remedies work for greater than 12 hours. So I suggest have a stock in your bag just in case you need to reapply.

I was in search and now I found the answer to my problem. I praise God!I hope these help a lot of people .

Please if any of these work...lets help other people know it. Body odor can really ruin one's life and esteem. We need to help others too.
#20 - in search - 04/14/2009 - 10:25
For those who really want to use a deodorant instead of what I suggested..try Mitchum unscented. It works well it won't give you that Body odor but make sure to wash your clothes well in the armpit area since deodorants sticks or dries in that part and if not washed well, will lead to body odor. Why? Because the sweat and Bacteria is still there.

Anyway..if you really insist on using a deodorant.. USE UNSCENTED. Ihave tried a lot of deodorants before almost all in the market just to find what suites me.And the UNSCENTED TYPE WORKS WELL.

But I suggest to try my 3 suggestion on top.

Armpit odor!! it sucks really sucks, I'm a clean person, I take my showers twice a day. I've used the lime thing, doesn't work well. Tried to stay away from eating meat, used a perscription, nothing works. there has to be something that will work. If I can smell it, I'm sure others can smell it.

#32 - db - 08/25/2009 - 17:07
Hydrogen Peroxide worked for me. I poured Hydrogen peroxide on all of my shirts (armpit part) that stinked then also applied hydrogen peroxide on my armpits and let it dry. The bacteria must be eliminated in both shirt and armpit. It will only become a cycle if both weren't remedied by the hydrogen peroxide.
#33 - ginger - 08/26/2009 - 22:34
my son has an extremely bad body odor, most of the time, he smells worst after taking a shower and I feel that's why he can't get work. Help!!1
#34 - Legz - 08/31/2009 - 01:47
use apple cider vinegar.apply it to armpits 5 mins prior to shower.wash with water, don't apply soap to pits.you should be smell free 24 hrs.;-):-)
#35 - claire - 09/03/2009 - 12:25
Please check the products that you're using as I had to switch to a natural deodorant because the aluminum in regular deodorant was irritating my underarms causing more problems. I had terrible underarm odor but got rid of it by soaking a cotton ball in Listerine and then wiping my underarms. I also took a detox bath with epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda for 20 minutes which helped too. Many recipes are on the internet for detox baths. I rarely have any odor now and have been able to go without deodorant, have actually forgotten to put it on when I'm rushing.
#36 - peaches - 10/03/2009 - 00:23
i am not too sure this article, it doesnt gives me the correct solution i want.
#37 - kayalee - 10/04/2009 - 13:46
do i have to apply the vinegar after i take a bath?....as replacement for my deodorant? because i have a body odor and its really embarassing...
#38 - emy - 10/13/2009 - 22:29
I have battled b.o. for years. The worst part is that I can't smell it until its VERY bad to others. To make matters worse, I'm a nurse!! I hear half-whispered comments all the time about baths, deodorants, etc. People have started sniffing when they are around me (I guess to hint to me). My husband says that he only notices a little more of a smell than on anyone else and only sometimes. It's still a work in progress, but here are some things that helped me make it better.

tips:

I have found that using liquid soap with chlorohexidine in it helps alot.

I use alum free deodorant (Kiss my face, Tom's, crystal rock, etc.) on daily basis.

I freshen up armpits during day with small alcohol wipes.

I use certain-dri every 3 or so days to control sweating.

I take chlorophyll supplements with meals.

Things I want to try in near future:
Colonics
Probiotic supplement
Zinc supplement.

I have had bad under arm odor ever since I had kids. I am also a very clean person and can smell it even immediately after showering. I have used rubbing alcohol which helps a little bit, but I work out a lot and want to wear tank tops and the odor is worse when I don't have material between my arm and armpit. I was spinning and someone went to take the bike next to me and then moved. I know it was because of me and I am horrified. I'm going to try some of these other remedies, but I would love to know which is best. It's probably individualized. I'm recently divorced and dating again and I am very conciencious of the odor when being intimate. HELP!!!!
#40 - desperate - 11/16/2009 - 08:55
SOLUTION GUYS. I also have that problem. My armpit sweat and smells. I tried all sorts of deodorants in the market but hey they let me down. I tried DRICLOR. I guaranteed that it's very effective. Just use once or twice you will instantly see the difference. You can also use this in other parts of your body that sweats too much. And yes, you can feel it dry, very dry after use. It's a bit expensive about P800.00. But it's really worth it. You can buy it at any mercury or any drugstore. My derma doctor highly recommended it as well. Try it guys m sure it can give back the confidence we all want.>-(
#41 - zoe 16 - 11/27/2009 - 02:04
Update. I have started taking a multivitamin that inlcudes zinc. I am taking a probiotic tablet once a day as well.

My dermatologist recently prescribed gentamicin cream to be appled tyo my underarms daily. The cream is not homemade or natural, obviously, but it WORKS BETTER than ANYTHING else I have tried!! I apply certain dri (very potent over the counter anti-perspsirant) every 3 days too. I can work 12hr shifts on my feet and still be as fresh as I have been in years! I LOVE IT. I have noticied a significant decrease in the whispers and sniffs!

It kills the bacteria that feed on the sweat and make the odor. Ask you dermatologist about it!!!
#42 - Wonderwoman - 11/28/2009 - 02:14
Hey there! I am a person who suffers from B.O, but not as bad as other people - lucky me. But I am always afraid it will continue to get worse. I am only 13, you know, but I hate body odour. It usually effects my underarms the most, and even my chest. I am still looking for something that will be effective enough, but here are some pieces of advice I already have. :-)

Deoderant: You don't want to purchase a deoderant filled with chemicals and metals...Look for a natural, organic deoderant with no metals, glycols or parabens. Sometimes there will be other ingredients that look funny to you. To be sure, look them up on the computer, because there are alot of other ones that are contained in deoderants. Better to be safe than sorry! And second of all, some people will tell you that anti-persperants are perfectly safe. I personally would not believe them, they don't know what they're talking about. Some effective natural deoderants I've heard of (which I haven't unfortunately tried yet...) are Burts Bees Herbal Deoderant; which is heavy on sage oil - http://www.burtsbees.ca/product-line/outdoor/herbal-deodorant.html - As with every other deoderant, shower or bath, cleansing the underarm area, before applying. If you use deoderant on dirty underarms then the scent of the deoderant will only make your B.O worse.
I've heard good things about Dr. Hauschka deoderants (https://store.drhauschka.com/). For girls, I personally would suggest the Floral deoderant, but the Fresh would work well too. Dr. Hauschka deoderant is pretty expensive, though. If you feel it is too over-priced for you, another option is Aubrey Organics. (www.aubreyorganics.com) I am going to get the E Plus High C Roll-On Deoderant. It is 100% natural! And all of the reviews on the site have reviews that say it is an exellent deoderant. There are other ones though, so be sure to go to their website!
Weleda is another good brand. http://use.weleda.com/
They have Sage deoderant, Citrus, and Wild Rose.

A natural remedy I made up myself is by getting a tupperware sandwich container and filling it with tepid water, then adding 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil and 1 drop of tea tree essential oil. The tea tree oil is optional, but using it is a good idea. Stir the water and essential oils, then add a small, dry, and clean wash cloth and soak in the herbal remedy for about 2-3 hours. In the shower, apply to the underarms and other desired areas such as the chest and back. Rinse off with cool or medium-temp. water. Hot water increases the body's temperature and encourages it to cool itself down by persperating. This home remedy I find works well for me.

B.O isn't caused by the persperation itself, but the bacteria that it feeds on.

Hope this advice helps!

if you really have strong body odor it may be that your skin or organs have absorbed chemicals from the environment, deodorant or scents from certain foods.. you need to change your diet and cleanse your body.. i found this great complete body purifier. called Ulta D 1-888 490-7300...this place also has a cleansing soap worth using. also you need to take 2,000 mg of milk thistle to cleanse your liver daily.. plus drink lots of water.. eliminate any foods that might create a foul smell... drink plenty herbal tea.. and see a naturopathic doctor if necessary..
#49 - leroy - 01/07/2010 - 23:36
you also need to take a wash cloth with soap to go over your skin in the shower and take baths in epsom salt .. don't give up.. also mold in your living environment can cause odor. your liver can absorb the mold.. make sure there isn't mold in the walls, the vents, etc.
#50 - leroy - 01/07/2010 - 23:56

Did you ever find your answer? I have the same problem. No matter how often I wash, I just NEVER feel fresh.

Have any of you that have the bad body odor had a complete vitamin/mineral test to see if you are missing some nutrients. There is one of the minerals that if it is to low it can cause odor.
I had a friend that had terrible odor that was because of her gut. She had to take probiotics to correct it.
Sometimes people that have an undiagnosed medical problem have trouble with odor - especially immune system problems.
If you are in so much distress (especially the teens) please see a doctor for a medical checkup as well as trying the vinegar/baking soda/listerine remedies.
At night after a good shower using Cetaphill Body Wash use a spray bottle with 1/2 vinegar/1/2 water to spray any area that usually has odor. Let it dry naturally and the vinegar smell will go away in a few minutes. Next morning use a cotton ball, pad or cloth with straight vinegar on it to wipe area that usually has odor and let it dry naturally. If you are nervous about it not working during the day take a very small plastic bottle with screw on lid (you can buy this at a dollar store or Walmart) with you when you leave home and go to the restroom during the day and use your fingers to rub it on the area that normally has odor during the day. After a few days you should see what works for you.
Make sure you stay away from junk foods, sodas and sugar and eat lots of veggies, fruits, juices and 64 ounces of water daily. (3 Twenty ounce bottles of water daily will do it) Make sure you are getting enough vitamins/minerals/calcium daily. See the www.fda.gov website for help on what you need daily as well as diets and weight charts.

I have been helped so much by all of the remedies that have been posted. We are going to try some of them and see what happens.

I shower twice a day and I don't sweat a whole lot, and only when i'm nervous or excited...the problem is the B.O. I have to go to school almost everyday using another crappy deoderant that only mixes with the smell and I smell worse. I tried almost all the clinical strength deoderant/antiperspirants and they don't work for me!I still sweat when I use them even though I don't sweat much anyway, and I've tried unscented versions too and they don't help with the smell either!:-[]
