This helps when you have a really bad cough or cold. I don't like the taste of garlic ... so one of my fav recipes is this:

1) You'll need a bagel, slice of brea or 2 (depending on your appetite), or some crackers

2) Cream cheese (any kind .. my fav is the Kraft Green Onion and onion flav)

3) Garlic (minced)

4)Honey

Mix the garlic with the cream cheese. Put in on the bagel, bread, or crackers. Then, pour the honey on top.

Garlic and honey is really good for you when you have a cold.

To drink - - tea w/ honey
or warm milk w/ honey

Do this for 2-3 days and you'll feel a lot better and your cough will go away!!

Breathing in the steam from a boiling pot of water relieves sinus pressure and loosens mucus. Just boil water and place towel over head. Do this for about 45 minutes taking brief fresh air pauses every 5 minutes or when steam feels like it is burning.
#10 - melody - 03/01/2008 - 12:04

HELP! I had viral fever abt 4weeks back. The fever got ok in a weeks time but the cough (dry) refuses to go away. It isn't getting worse but not better as well. It's driving me nuts. It gets worse at night when I go to bed. Now I feel giddy and have body pains too.(I do not know if it has to do with the cough). Nothing is helping really.
What to do? The lemon thing really helps.

Green ginger tea with lemon juice and LOTS of honey. When getting over a cold, I often have such a bad cough that I lose my voice, and this is the only thing I've found that helps. (Although I haven't tried the cayenne pepper concoctions and whatnot, perhaps they're worth a shot next time.) Also be sure to drink plenty of water to loosen the mucus in your chest.
#19 - m - 05/17/2008 - 19:29
:-) The lemon with the pepper was an instant relief but the teas are good for long term too.
#20 - sam - 05/25/2008 - 04:51

i have a really bad cough and i have a sporting event this afternoon. what should i do to get rid of my cough???????:-[]
#24 - Talie - 06/18/2008 - 15:42
OK first off VICKS is not a natural substance, it really should be taken of the Natural remedy site.. come on folks might as well tell me to down a load of "cough syrup".

but juniper, peppermint, eucalyptus and camphor essential oils will remind you very much of vicks, if you need it to be in a paste add it to some coconut oil or natural lotion. that can help break up the mucus in your chest.

for the long term and I am about to brew this up: to help your bodies immune system which is making the cough not fighting it, brew some tulsi tea, with ginger, add lemon and honey and a bit of garlic, let that all brew but drink it hot. then a table spoon of pure honey, may sugar you up but it helps sooth your throat.

Good luck to the coughers, I couldnt even work last night!

over all get lots of rest try to stop smoking, take a long walk to get your blood circulating and meditate on your bodies natural ability to heal itself, you may find there is a reason for your current condition out in your illusionary world of work and relationships, are you over stressed? is their guilt in your mind, your heart? Do some yoga, let your body work it out but keep in mind its all in your head:)

I seem to do well with relieving my cough with a combination of cayenne pepper and a hot spiced, sugar free cider mix. I believe the cayenne pepper may be the key ingredient. I had ordered out for lunch one day and for some reason or another tried some habanero pepper sauce on some beans. Within 20 minutes, I felt like a new person and was able to breathe without coughing. Rule of thumb, you may want to consult a physician if you have high blood pressure before attempting this remedy.
#31 - Sharrin S. - 09/08/2008 - 19:05

#32 - rima - 09/20/2008 - 16:18
I used to be so frustrated. About four years back I found out that I was allergic to anything with menthol or menthol-lyptus in it, which means basically anything from the drug store that supposedly helps with cough. I like to use natural remedies as much as I can anyway. Unfortunately, I used some supposedly natural cough drops that had no menthol in the ingredients (so not true) - if anyone else has this allergy, read the fine print because they ALL have it in them.

I recommend a simple mixture of green tea (natural antioxidents) and as much honey as you wish. Any kind of lemon tea will work, but the green tea is better for you. If it's a cough due to allergies, try to stay away from herbal teas as many of those herbs are in the ragweed family, or closely related and will just worsen your cough and allergy. Also, when using honey, try to use a local honey because it will contain the pollen from local allergens which will act the same (or near the same) as an allergy shot and it will help you build an immunity to such allergens.
#33 - Tanis - 09/21/2008 - 09:02

I need suggestions. I have been coughing something furious the past few days and it just won't go away. And just about an hour ago I had one big cough where a bloody piece of membrane or something came out of my mouth. Since then I have been coughing much less but my upper chest has really sharp pains. Also the past few hours my pee has been a reddish purple color. Should I see a doctor or wait it out?

#59 - bec - 01/22/2009 - 06:58
I get a cough every year. It starts with a tickle in my throat and then goes to a sore throat. Then I start coughing and some mucus comes up. The cough lasts about 4 months. I have gone to many Dr.'s and they tell me I have asthma (the Dr. gives me an inhaler but does not work). I have tried many things to try and get rid of an annoying cough. I have not tried the lemon with the pepper, so I will try that one. Does anyone have any suggestions?
#60 - Terry - 01/25/2009 - 22:37
To Mikey, #54, who asked if he should see his doctor or wait it out:
at the very least CALL your doctor and describe what is happening--then if he or she doesn't call back soon, go somewhere & see someone. you shouldn't take the advice of people who are not doctors telling you to avoid one. You could have something serious going on, and as natural as we try to be, don't mess with serious stuff like the chest pains, differences in urination, etc. that you described. Really. Using this site should not be a substitute for getting professional medical advice. Even if you don't have insurance there are walk-in (ie less expensive then ER) places usually open late in many areas, & part of a doctor's job is to take phone calls so don't feel bad if you need to call. But if they don't call you back SOON, find a professional to talk to or see just to rule things out. and let us know what happened. hope you are okay.

i need a cure for stretch marks. any suggestions?
#62 - tlugg - 02/09/2009 - 20:30
For a non-stop cough that won't go away and keeps you up at night, mix together well: 1 tsp cayenne pepper; 1 tsp ground ginger; 2 Tbsp water; 1 Tbsp cider vinegar; 1 Tbsp (or more) honey.
Stiry well then drink 2-3 teaspoons. Just gave this to my son who was coughing for a half hour straight. He refuses to let me put the Vicks (camphor, eucalyptus, menthol) on the bottoms of
his feet (although I know for certain it usually works). The liquid mixture stopped his cough within 5 minutes and (it's 3am) he's asleep.
#63 - Hootmon, AZ - 02/19/2009 - 04:48
I started out with fever and then a deep cough after the fever was gone... how long before most coughs go away?:-(
#64 - mmG - 02/20/2009 - 21:35
I know everytime anyone in our household gets sick, the coughs are always the last symptom to go away. It can last for a few weeks.
#65 - Liss in PA - 02/22/2009 - 12:20
After reading above posts, I just made my own version of cough syrup, I already feel better. I just boiled cinnamon, fennel (sauf) powder, black pepper, sugar and a tea bag. At the same time squeezed half lemon in my cup and poured this hot herbal mix. Have it hot. Try to feel each sip in your throat and you will feel better.
#66 - Rucain - 03/07/2009 - 18:56

#67 - Tangy - 03/10/2009 - 14:10
I have a cough that is from a cold that I had this week. I don't mind coughing, dont get me wrong, but when it is bothering whoever you are sleeping with and cutting into your prime sleeping hours, that is a problem! I would rather be sick sick than have this nasty dry cough that is mainly at night...Anyway, in hopes of a good WORKING home remedy on here.....I don't have much food in my house however, I do have salt, pepper, honey, and tea...I know, sounds weird...pepper in tea...But just mix it all together and warm it up, drink it hot....It works! At least for those who are like me and dont keep the refrigerator stocked up with all these unusual things!! ;-)
#68 - Jus_Mee - 03/15/2009 - 00:42
Try a few drops of peppermint oil (from a health food store) or a half cup white vinegar in your vaporizer. You can also try vicks on your feet with socks or vicks on your chest covered with a washcloth.
#69 - Heather - 03/15/2009 - 18:20
I have tried EVERYTHING ..for 14 years now..did the hot tea thing for awhile, but it wears off so quickly on me, heard about the vicks thing a couple of years ago..didn't work for me..i take a couple of slices of pickle chips and put quite a bit of salt and pepper on them and eat ...it's really amazing how fast it works..also i've done the orange slice w/ s+p..both remedies work great! :-D

i m suffering from cold & cough from 6 years.
i avoid yoghurt, cold drink, ice-cream or any cold items but i feel always cold & cough
#77 - Ratan - 05/11/2009 - 08:13
I get this twice a year... at the change of the season. I get a cold and then a cough that can easily last up to a month.

Hot drinks work really well. Anything that doesn't contain caffeine (it'll keep you awake, unless you're braving the real world, then go for it), add some spices, I usually use a pinch of anything that happens to be at home. Pepper, mint, ginger, if you've got garlic, crush a clove and drop it in as well... and honey. Honey is a cure-all. If you can stand it, some heavy alcohol like rum or whiskey will put you right to sleep. I like to vary it because if this happens regularly like mine, you'll get tired of it.

Avoid dairy 'cause it promotes phlegm. Drink lots of water, it'll loosen the phlegm and flushes your system.

Also, prevention is better than cure - if you do something about your cough regularly you won't have to find yourself in public coughing up your lungs and resorting to some pharmacy-toxin.

And another thing VICKS IS NOT NATURAL. If it works for you, good, but this site claims to be natural and yet every third post proclaims Vick's is best. REMOVE IT PLEASE

Well, the best I can do is try a bagel with cream cheese and dried garlic and lemonpepper on it with a hot cup of lemon tea mixed with vanilla/honey tea (not actual honey, the tea flavor is vanilla & honey) let's see how it goes as it's 2 A.M and I haven't slept normally for almost a week because of the cough...wasn't bad until yesterday and couldn't get Dr. appt...well, coughed right after eating bagel, but it didn't hurt as much (didn't cough while eating it), working on tea...yeah, it's 2 and I can't sleep...tea seems to be helping!!
#81 - Done with the cough... - 06/07/2009 - 00:54
First, remove the REASON for the cough, for example, if u have a lot of mucus down ur throaght, then you should remove it first. Try some medicaments that help dissolve or push out the mucus, or simply try coughing it out if u can.
Second, mix 4 tsp honey, with 1 tsp ginger power, 1/2 tsp black pepper powder, and 2 tsp water. Eat slowly, 2-3 tsp when u have cough. Will work instantly, better do it so ur cough stops and then sleep right away before u start feeling like coughing again.

A good way to cure a cough is stay in bed as warm as you can be. Or get a cup of boiling water and pour manuka honey in to it ;-)
#91 - Áine Moreland - 07/23/2009 - 06:36
This lemon with pepper and salt really works wonders..within minutes cough is gone..Thanks a ton:-)
#92 - princi - 07/23/2009 - 21:31
You can try chopping up six onions and put into a pot with a half cup of honey. Cook slowly for two hours then strain. Take in regular intervals, preferably warm.

You can also try eating 2 oz. of dark chocolate. There is an ingredient in chocolate that helps stop coughs. Effects should last about four hours.

I gave my eight year old daughter limon juice(didnt have a real lemon at 12:00 at night) with pepper and salt it worked in minutes.she just sipped on it for 5-10 minutes she has asthma so it is hard to find something that works.this workes great!!!!!
#94 - amanda - 08/07/2009 - 02:11
Holistic approach, will work:
1) Take in lots of fluids, preferably warm as possible with lemon, ginger, honey, cayenne or black pepper (all or even 1 of these will help). Need to keep hydrated when fighting a cough. This means drinking 3 to 4 times as much as usual. You should begin to pee very often - do this for 2 to 3 days until cough is half as bad and then reduce liquids to 2 times more than usual for another 3 to 5 days, then go back to normal drinking.
2) Can also use steam treatments with menthol, eucalyptus, camphor or similar things to help further keep hydration up.
3) Take a tablet of zinc gluoconate 3 to 4 times a day for first 3 days, then daily until all well. Also can take lozenges or zinc oral spray. Body needs the zinc to fight the infection - proven to reduce coughs and colds.
4) Take a magnesium citrate tablet or magnesium chelate tablet (chelated is best) 3 x per day for 5 days. Add this to your daily diet by taking 1 tablet daily for maxium protection and wellness.
5) Also a good idea to take a multi MINERAL tablet a few times a week to keep up minerals in the body which are always depleted nowadays. Chelated forms are best.
6) Lots of sleep and rest.
7) Try the teas and other herbal solutions mentioned here in place of #2, but need to do all 6 things for quick and total cure.
God Bless and all the best!

Hi Everyone,
I feel for everyone; and not knowing what remedies to take. I'm too have chronic coughing. It's every single day/ night. It interfere with my life, at work, in the movies, at home, subway, everywhere I go and do.
It can be from Asthma or Post nasal drip. You should do the following suggestion:
1. Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Doctor, to rule out the possibilities'
2. Holistic Med's
3. Acid Flux- Read on it; it mention Chronic Coughing.

Well, God bless you all. I hope someone can give us all an educated guess what "WE" really have; and can do for us.

:-)
#96 - sylvie - 08/12/2009 - 11:55
i love this - "i have a cough due to smoking." well, have you tried NOT smoking???

if it is a productive cough, encourage it, spitting out the phlegm (or your tummy will be upset).

for a dry, unproductive cough, honey seems to be the magic bullet :)
#97 - A. - 08/14/2009 - 10:53
:-)Make a tea with chamomile, sabucus, basil, and agrimonium!Make it strong and ad a teaspoon of honey! It will help A LOT!

:-DGreetings friends,It's that time of the season where pollen is very high (northeast) I agree with the Muliti vitamin, magnesium.Plenty of fluids, local area honey is wonderful, about a table spoon daily.Mucinex is a great product found in Walmart,or most drug stores.Plenty of water.Time to get those vaporizers out and ready for the season, make sure they are clean (filters) Also herbal teas, cayanne and black currant syrup is wonderful preventitives,For us asthmatics, make certian your nebulizers are clean/ready to use
'One more suggestion,MOST allergens enter the body thru our sinuses, read information on the NETTI POT,clean sinuses = a smoother cold and flu season for us.An ounce of prevention,is worth a pound of cure>>

One of my health newsletters recommended the herb Stinging Nettle for cough/asthma. Four years ago I found that the Nature's Way brand Nettle works for me. I was able to give up 5 prescription asthma medications if I take the Nettle capsules every day. Much better.

I have asthma and i get really bad coughs. What always help me is to but a rice bag on my chest.
#106 - Larz - 09/11/2009 - 16:08
I've been left with a persistent cough and tight airways since having the flu. A naturopath told me to boil 1tsp fenugreek seeds in a cup of water and drink 3 times/day to break up mucous. This is helping. You can strain or eat the seeds, which I enjoy doing.
I also tried eating a thick slice of raw onion, chopped and dipped in a couple of tspns of honey. This gave me some instant relief. Red onion is easier to eat than white or brown.
#107 - Sue - 09/14/2009 - 20:25

#120 - rob - 10/14/2009 - 12:17
I do not understand why some of you want Vick's VapoRub to be removed. Its ingredients of Camphor, Menthol and Eucalyptus oil are natural.

FYI...
Camphor is considered as essential oil and came from Camphor tree (cinnamomum camphora) that is native of China, Japan and eastern Asia. It can also be made synthetically.

Menthol is an organic compound made from peppermint oil or other mint oils. It is also made synthetically.

Vick's VapoRub can be considered a natural remedy and it has its place in this page.

this is the best method it works for me all the time...
1. Take 2 tbsp of Carom seed (ajwain)
2. Boil that in water on low heat...until you see about 2 to 3 tbsp of water left.
3. Drain it in a small cup
4. Mix 2 pinchs of salt and tumeric powder
5. Drink this mixture everyday before going to bed, until your cough is gone...and do not take water after this.
#124 - Nehal - 10/18/2009 - 15:51
Another method that is easy and works is
1. Take half a cup of warm milk
2. Add 2 pinchs of salt and tumeric powder
3. Drink this mixture every night, before going to bed.. and not intake of water after this.
Repeat until cough is gone.
