Constipation refers to infrequent bowel movement, incomplete evacuation of bowel, decrease in the volume or weight of the bowel. It may also refer to passage of small amounts of hard and dry bowel movements. It is the disturbance in the digestive tract that gives rise to many other ailments in the body. The infrequent bowel movement does not allow the removal of toxins produced in the body. As a result they find their way in the blood stream from where they enter all parts of the body causing malfunctioning of the parts.
Causes of Constipation
Regular drinking of water is highly beneficial for cleaning the system. Normally 6-8 glasses of water are recommended for digesting and dissolving the food nutrients.
Eating chapatti made of wheat (two parts) and roasted black gram powder (one part) along with their husk is also beneficial and is good constipation remedy.
To make good home remedy for constipation take 2 tablespoons of Blackstrap molasses before going to sleep. Molasses are high in calories. It has a strong taste, though, you may want to add it to milk, fruit juice, or prune juice etc.
Walking 4-5 kms. after dinner is highly beneficial as it helps in the digestion of food.
Half cup cabbage juice taken twice-daily cures constipation.
Mango is a natural reliever of constipation.
Dip 10-12 dry grapes without seeds in milk and boil the milk. Drink the milk separately and chew the grapes. This is more beneficial when taken at night. This is one of the useful home remedies for constipation.
Dip Spiegel seeds 5-10 grams in 200 grams of warm milk. Add sugar and take this during night. This is very useful diet for constipation.
Chronic constipation can be cured with high intake of figs dipped in water and taken in the morning time. This constipation remedy is very effective and one of the good home remedies for constipation.
Dates along with milk also relieve constipation.
Dip two teaspoonfuls of Spiegel seeds in water for 6 hours, add equal amount of sugar and take this with water at night. This is very simple and effective home remedy for constipation.
Drinking water, which has been kept overnight in a copper vessel in the morning with empty stomach, will give immediate relief from constipation. - Good home remedy for constipation
Mix 1/4 teaspoon of Epsom salt to 1/2 a glass of water and drink. This is a good constipation remedy.
Mix 1/2 cup olive oil with 1/2 cup orange juice and drink. This is another useful natural remedy for constipation.
Daily intake of guava with empty stomach in the morning is highly beneficial.
Take some fennel seeds and add them to a glass full of warm water. Drink this water each night before going to bed. Fennel has properties in curing digestive problems. The regular use of fennel will normalize the working of the digestive system and heal the constipation problems. This is very useful and one of the good home remedies for constipation.
2-4 teaspoonfuls of castor oil also relieve constipation.
Carrot juice mixed with spinach juice gives immediate relief from constipation.
A teaspoon of linseed taken with water before each meal provides bulk and lubrication, thus curing constipation.
Mix the powder of one dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) with the powder of some senna leaves in equal proportions. Put these powders in a cup of lukewarm water. Drink this water while it is still a little warm every night. This will ensure proper passing of stools in the morning and is good constipation treatment.
The juice of two oranges taken in the morning with empty stomach for 8-10 days relieves constipation.
A teaspoon of linseeds, swallowed with water before each meal, provides lubrication and is good natural remedy for constipation.
1-2 teaspoons of almond oil taken with milk at night for 3-4 days also relieves constipation.
Take almond oil with milk every night before going to sleep. This controls the constipation and helps in proper voiding of stools in the morning. This is very effective and simple constipation remedy.
4 grams of triphala powder when taken with 200 grams of warm water or milk also relieves constipation. Morpheme Triphala provides Natural Triphala extract in vegetable capsules. Charaka states that “by using this recipe continuously for one year, one can live for a hundred years, free from aging and diseases”
Prepare a mixture of equal quantities of carrot juice and spinach juice in a glass. Drink this glassful of juices at night before going to sleep. This is one of the effective home remedies for constipation.
Vajrasana is one of the yogasanas beneficial for constipation cure.
Drinking hot water with sour lime juice and half a teaspoon of salt is also an effective constipation treatment.

another thing that works wonders for me is a high fiber cereal taken with milk in the mornings. I prefer POST Banana Nut Crunch! its delicious and nutritious...and really helped my problem of chronic constipations!
Go out and buy Mangosteen juice (I used Lakewood brand). The recommended 1oz. 3 times a day, but drink at least 2oz. at least 4 times a day. Its a little bit expensive, but totally worth it and VERY good for you. This worked for me after a doctor told me that I needed a strong drug to make me go.

My daughter is 4 yrs old. She is suffering from constipation almost all her life. Recently it bcame so bad. Last one month she almost never had a normal bowel movement. I used enemas three times (with doctors advice) to clean her bowel. Again she did not go for last three days. We went to doctor and he prescribed lactulose. We are giving that for last one week but not working. So lets tell u what I m tryng now.
I give her one glass of little warm water in the morning in empty stomach. Then she eats her breakfast . I give her one tablsespoon of olive oil with some pear juice. during launch and dinner evryday I give her broccoli or spinach with rice and chicken/fish. everyday during dinner I give her one tbs of flex seed powder with dinner and after dinner at least one glass of water. Everyday at least once a tbs of brown sugar followed by a glass of water. everyday she eats few pieces of cantalope and apple/ pear. Then I blend some cantaole and feed her that too. I restricted her milk by 16 oz. I give her a tbs of corn syrup with milk. I used to give her 8 oz prune juice everyy morning for few months but recently I stopped it becasue it is not working. Poor girl, drinks at leat 5 glass of water everyday. I don't give almost any junk food to her. Recently I read a procedure "applying few drops of castor oil on naval" during night time. I even tried that. I tried gentle tummy message, positive re-enforcement. Nothing is working. Anyone, please give me some ideas.

This diet is amazing, I did it for weight loss, which works wonders but the diet actually clears out your system no matter how bunged up you may get, then if you eat bran flakes every morning and drink a lot of water and fresh fuit and veg, I find I'm good for a month or so and feel SO WELL!!
Then if I get the feeling that I'm getting bunged up again I do the four day diet again and it resets everything. Buy it. I has changed my life.
I do it every two months on average and do not need to do anything else. It really has changed my life. :-)

I've been constipated for a month and I've taken tons of stool softeners laxatives ect. I've increased my fibre and water intake. I s even tried olive oil and castor oil. I can feel the blockage of poop above my belly button :( I just want to be normal and have decent BM's seriously! I am only 21 and dont want to live like this for the rest of my life. I tried Nature Slim Tea which is usually found online or Asian Supermarkets.....Steep a tea bag for a few minutes and drink the tea before going to bed and in the morning you will have a clean colon! EVERYTHING will pour out like a waterfall LOL BUT, I only drink this tea if its my last resort.....Whenever I drink this tea for relief purposes, it gives me deadly cramps, makes me dizzy and nautious...maybe because im 110lbs idk? but its extrememly painful and i've passed out twice due to this tea. I dont know what to do!!

Hello my fellow sufferers >-(. I have been stopped up for over a month now :-( and I gotta tell you I've tried everything from fiber capsules, fiber laxitive capsules, to apple cider vinegar, lime juice in warm water, warm milk, to the peanut butter and syrup concoction. Even tried sitting here while I read all your post with my finger on my chin (as you can tell I've been trying to stay with the natural remedies). Some of these things maybe worked the first time but never complete relief. My husband suggested black olive juice, about 32oz of it. He swears by it! After co-workers bet him, when he was working at a pizza joint, to down exactly that amount, he couldn't get off the toilet 45 min later :oops:. Well, feeling at the end of my rope I went to my local King Soopers (Krogers to some) intending to purchase about 4 cans of the stuff. I headed to the produce section to get some lemons. thinking that it could only help aid the aformentioned juice. Well I just happened to pass the "digestion" area in the store. I thought "forget it! I'm just gonna get a synthetic laxitive" So I decided on a cheaper version of correctol. I just happened to keep looking and my eyes passed over th mineral oil (gag!) the castor oil (yuck!) and my eyes rested on this 10oz bottle filled with a red liquid. MAGNESIUM CITRATE! For under 2 BUCKS!!!! A shot in the dark, but for less that 2 dollars, I'll take it. I got home read the directions and took it accordingly. In 1 hour heard that welcomed embarrassing sound of digestion....and boy was it loud!:-o 2 and a half hrs later I had a small, hard bowel movement!!!!! Four hours later.....THE FLOOD GATES OPENED :-P !!!!!! I could not believe it...after a whole flipping month and for less than 2 dollars IT happened!:-P The way the magnesium citrate works is that it absorbs water from the body into the intestine and just ushers everything out. I experienced some cramping and alot of urination along with it. You can get dehydrated so drink lots of water!! So I put the olives in the cupboard for eating and warned my husband and daughter to clear a path to the bathroom!!! This worked for me in just hours, I hope you have the same luck. After stool softeners, laxatives and an enema... it was nature that got me going. LoL.
Honestly.... I JUST tried this and it took approx 30 min's to work, but IT WORKED!!! Drink 2 cups chicken broth or broth from ckn noodle soup (no noodles). Heat it up as hot as you can stand to swallow it -- u want to drink it ALL while it's hot, not warm.
Then follow it with 2 cups of something icy cold (I had iced tea with some sugar and ice cubes). Drink that quickly also. THIS IS IMPORTANT: Move around your house, nothing overly strenuous, I dusted and cleaned countertops, lol. And my stomach liiterally started 'rumbling' like it growls when ur hungry, and then, ta da!!!! I didn't 'clean' me out, but it at least got things movin on out!!! Never in my life have I been SO uncomfortable and distressed!!!! Had no idea one could feel so sick and be in so much pain. Hope it works for someone else too!!!! I'm convinced it was the combo of steaming hot greasy broth, the moving around, then the cold liquid to force the hot further in. Am going to repeat in a little while.

Finally used half cap of miralax in 12 oz cup of apple juice 2 times a day, am and around dinner time. Once she got loose I cut doseage back to am half capful in juice to maintain. She is 5 now. No miralax needed. We just make sure she has fluid and talk about how everyone does stinky poops. She still does not like to go at school, but she never goes more than 2 days without a movement.
Mom has tried the brown sugar in water been 2 hrs no movement. Must try something else.
What was happening:
I had been having constipation very
regularly, I had tried a lot of laxatives,
some times ended up taking laxatives once in
a week. Then I had tried even magnesium
citrate to flush my system. One day I had
picked up Aloe Vera dessert packet from a
Global Foods store and used it. The packet
had chunks of Aloe Vera in a juice that was
made very sweet. It was actually tasty and very good.
It made a difference like never before. I
started feeling very light and my bowel
moments had become very regular. I do not
feel boalted any more. I wanted to tell about
this in all forums for Constipation, because
the cure to the problem is in the nature of
the system and Aloe Vera restores the system.

Fully agree that the normal sitting position is a hinderance as I found nothing happened when sitting, and when I stood up I felt the need to go, so I tried standing to get it started but it was'nt until I squatted holding my chin it all came out.
Did'nt have to worry about weeing everywhere, as during the constipation I could'nt even wee..but as soon as the bulk came out I was able to wee again.
Had been trying for 8 hours to go, eating pears and some prune juice, made a soup of carrots, spinach, garlic, alfalfa sprouts and kidney beans.
Iam 63 years old, and figure after reading some of the comments on the prostate, that the position one tries to do it is vital..
Would like to thank all you people that helped me with your comments, and only hope that mine will help others as well.
Normally I do'nt have trouble, but after a few days of stodgy foods and little water at this age I get really blocked up.

2) tablespoon of molasses
3) another full glass of water
4) raspberry juice (juicy juice makes an apple raspberry that ought to work, also... raspberries are VERY high in fiber) MIXED WITH FLAX SEED OIL (1 tablespoon)
5) 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, (lemon juice optional but you may find it covers the flavor of the vinegar), and hot BLACK tea (not green or herbal, there are specific properties in black tea that aid in this process)
Continue drinking water as you see fit... you can also try pressing your finger into the center of your chin as earlier suggested... it certainly can't HURT!
As for regulating yourself, the normal: diet, exercise, fiber fiber fiber, hydration hydration, hydration, and learn your trigger foods. I put Half N Half in my coffee instead of milk and didn't eliminate for TWO WEEKS. A mistake I will not make again. PS. Light Yogurt (low/no sugar) will definitely help, it does NOT have to be name brand, like Activia if an alternative is cheaper!
Brown Sugar and cold water, combined with the chin pressure point. It took 1/2 an hour, and then have gone 4 times since.
Of course it goes without saying, but I will say it. If you are going to try something, make sure you can commit to being near a bathroom. When my stomach pain hit, I had about 10 seconds to get to the toilet.
Started to take sleep aid because it kept me from sleeping and sometimes even felt dizzy.
Tried apple juice followed by prune juice followed by more liquid, Senna tea (Indian tea), magnesium supplement and milk of magnesia. (Always drink a glass of water in the morning.) Sometimes they worked, but eventually stopped working and just made my stomach more bloated.
Went through colonoscopy and my gastroenterologist diagnosed me as IBS and prescribed Amitiza. He also gave me some sample of it, but it didn't work for me. Tried Benefiber since he recommended, but didn't work, either. Wanting to get some natural way, searched website for a while and found enema kit for home. Also found macrobiotic diet and Edgar Cayce diet.
Those saved my life! I used filtered water for enema for about a month and made my stomach feel soooo clean! (Some people use coffee, but I prefer drinking it from my mounth.) As for diet, stopped to put milk or cream (oh, I love them!) to coffee/tea and limited the intake of other dairy products as well. Switched to brown rice, avoided heavy meal especially in the morning, fatty food and sweets (mostly baked goods). Realized animal fat, dairy products and white sugar somewhat clogged my system. Often saw some fiber-like white stuff came out after I used enema.
Now my stomach is back to normal again! Still use enema occasionally, but not much anymore. No more sleeping aid and no more dizziness! Want to share my story with people who suffer the similar condition as I had.;-)

I'm suffering from constipation as i write this, first time such horror happens to me! I got medicine from the pharmacy yesterday, "quick relief" they said, i am at work now in torture still...
this morning i tried to go but all that come out were two little hard stones. the rest just wouldn't come out. i spent the whole day in pain...awful unending pain made worse by having to sit half the morning.
making my way home i decided it had to end. looking at the comments here, i saw many repeating coffee (which i had) and the finger on the chin thing. so, not wanting to trep my way to the shop, i drank cold coffee with lots of milk and sugar, then went on the loo with my feet up and holding my chin. At first it felt really funny and didn't work but then....I don't know, was it the coffee kicking in, my feet being up or the chin holding? either way a combination of all three had me going normally again.
I'm now very relieved, empty and swearing never to ignore a BM again. thanks for all the tips it really helped!;-)
I can go literal months without.. err, going.
But, there are things I have found that can help you.
Green grapes, for example. Just.. keep.. eating them. The entire bag if you can. I'm not certain why they help (perhaps the fiber? Or maybe the yeast..?) but they are wonderful at relieving stubborn constipation.
Eat them on an empty stomach.
Apples are also good as a preventative. Just eat one a day, whatever kind you prefer. Golden Delicious, Gala, and Pink Ladies are my personal favorites.
Not that it's really natural, but Dulcolax made this dissolve-able.. fiber.. stuff.. that you drink with your water. You can't taste it, and it WILL help you to move.
Sitting down, I've found, makes it much more painful and unpleasant to pass difficult stool. Try leaning over something (like your sink...) don't try and pass it sitting.
And I know what your thinking, but relief first, clean-up later.
You've got to do what you've got to do, and whatnot.
Enemas will help you, but they are horribly unpleasant and I'm mildly afraid of them. But, if you've no other choice.. well, they WILL make you move.
My aunt drinks ice-cold prune juice and follows it with hot coffee. She recommends that you take the drinks into the rest room with you, and drink them in there.. apparently, they work quickly.

It is best if you go at least once a day. If not, it accumulates and won't go out. Coffee dehydrates the body, and water is what digests food. Our metabolism is made up of two parts: catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism takes apart by ADDING water and breaking down the covalent bonds.
EAT REGULARLY, HEALTHY, AND DRINK WATER.
If you have not gone in a week, it might be necessary to manually take it out. Yes, gloves and all.

i have always been slow to go, with occasional periods of daily regularity. once every three days is more normal for mr. heard about magnesium supplements hekping with constipation and had great results for the first few days, taking 1 in the morning and one at night, along with my "new year's resolution" daily vitamins, including a fish oil supplement. After about a week or so, the regularty part dropped off and have had an unsettled belly for two or three days, feeling like
i was about to have a bout of diarrhea, and then nothing happens. also painful belly off and on every 20 min or half hour. I just wish I could have my husband's habits and go EVERY morning after two cups of coffee. Can't stand coffee and the caffeine in tea and sodas doesn't work for me that way either...

Prunes help, papaya helps- but what works the most is working out. After getting my body to move around, I noticed that I had the sensation to go after working out. And the more crunches I did, the more easier it was for me to go.

6 oz Cleansing/Dieters Tea (Laci LeBeau is usually sold at WalMart) before you go to bed. When you wake, on an empty stomach drink the following:
32 oz of Filtered (or Spring) Water
2 Tsp of SEA Salt
STAY BY BATHROOM. Its like and interal enema and takes about 1-1.5 hours to completely purge.
use the tea as needed to keep yourself regular, but DON'T oversteep as too strong can cause cramping. Also, drink plenty of water before the flush, because you can't eat/drink until the purge is done (about 2 hrs).
Another easy relief I use is milk of magnesia or Senna tea. You have to take it before you go to bed and it works in the next morning aftrer you drink a glass of water or have breakfast. You shouldn't use it everyday though.
Recently, I found drinking two glasses of water before breakfast works, too. Then have breakfast consisting only fruit juice or fruit, no bagels, muffins, donuts, etc. You can drink tea of coffee, but not milk.

3. The squatting thing is true, but I will not squat on some newspaper or go on the floor! gross... so you CAN sit on the toilet just put your feet on books or something, lean over... it does make a difference. Our bodies were not made to go to the bathroom sitting down.
4. do NOT just shock your system with a bunch of fiber (fiber cereal, fiber bars, etc...) you will be come bloated and more stopped up. Introduce it slowly and naturally. Fruits and vegetables. Lord, help me, do NOT eat those fiber bars- my poor stomach blew up like I was pregnant!
5. Miralax. take it every night for 6 months. did it and it got me back on track (works and is safe for/ with children too)
6. magnesium citrate if you are impacted. I did xrays and ultrasounds of my stomach (very expensive) to find out I need a dollar bottle of magnesium citrate from CVS. try the lemon kind with some sprite. - this is not meant to be done very often though. only if you are impacted. if you are impacted regularly, go to the doctor!
sad, but you have to change your diet. lots of water, fruits and vegetables, salad, try to stay away from red meat (hard to digest)... stay away from breads, sweets, cheese, all the good stuff!
exercise (walking is great) and flaxseed oil. hope that helps someone. constipation is so miserable!
about constipation
I have 5-6 bowel movements daily (last 5 yrs). They are semi well formed and many times undigested food and blackish and thin.
It takes a VERY long time to pass stools so I spend 2.5-3 hrs in toilet daily and cant go anywhere. I ear simple vegan diet and have always had a lot of clean water. I am lactose intolerant so just have yogurt and I am not gluten sensitive.
I have tried so many natural remedies and I think more important than fixing constipation, I think I need digestion support. I have tried, enzymes, probiotics - you name. Experimenting with hydrochloric acid and pepsin but not help.
Please if anyone has similar situation and something worked, please post.

i have been on pain meds and i feel like i have to poop but its so big and hard that i physically cant get it out. hopefully something here helps.
So for every 2-3 days, 20 minutes before my dinner, I will drink a cup of prune juice (250ml). Then have my dinner. I must have hot soup/hot drink to accompany the meal as well, so that it "heats" up my stomach and makes me want to go to the toilet faster. The urge to go to the toilet usually comes within an hour, or if it's fast, immediately after the meal. You WILL release everything that's in there. It definitely worked for me for the past 2 years.
But for the past 3 weeks, the prune juice didn't seem to work. The stool was so difficult to come out. It's hard and sticky. Lots of straining. I drank lime juice, ate spicy food to stir my stomach, even tried the brown sugar with cold water method. None worked.
That's it. I'm only 19! I turned to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).
The physician told me that my large intestine is "heaty" (Go wikipedia and search 'heaty' and 'cooling' terms in TCM), causing the stool to be hard and 'reluctant' to get out. I was told to avoid deep fried/fried/spicy/hot food, and given packs of medicinal powder to drink 2 times a day after meal. At the same time, told to take fuits and veggies/drink plain water regularly. I was told it will take some time before I stop relying on the medicinal powder and get back my regular bowel movement.
Yes, indeed, it worked. It just worked normally. You will just have the urge to go to the toilet, just like any healthy beings do.
For the first 2 days after drinking it, I began to pass out stool. Still hard, but at least, I got everything that were stucked, out. Then for the next few days, my bowel movement got back to 'normal'. I reduced to drinking one packet a day. I will have the urge to go to the toilet at least twice every day.
It's not that I don't trust our 'Western' doctors out there. But everytime I tell them about my problem, they prescribe suppositories and tell me to change my diet. Eat a lot of fruits and veggies and drink lots of water (Not like I have not been doing...). And that's all about it they could do. But taking fruits and veggies is just not the immediate cure to getting the stool that had been stuck in there for days, smoothly out. Sufferers would know what I mean.
Of course, I don't know what the medicinal powder is, but if you believe in TCM, do look for one, see what may be wrong with your health/body and let the physician prescribe you medicine suitable for you.

First make sure you have lots of toilet paper and air-freshener spray. You will be going to the bath room frequently.
This is the recipe
2 level teaspoons of natural sea salt ( no substitution or it will not work) sea salt is less the $2 dollars at Walmart.
32 oz of Purified Drinking Water ( no substitution or it will not work) this is also at walmart for a little more then $2 for a gallon.
Heat the water on the stove, do not boil, just to lukewarm temperature for drinking.
Have the 2 teaspoons of salt ready in a 32 ounce container, pour lukewarm water over the salt, mix well.
Drink the sea salt mix all in one sitting, I have a little bit of the purified water on ice just to sip to get the taste of salt off my tongue, this is just for sipping and not for drinking. Some people have a hard time drinking salt water but I imagine it as a salty soup broth, and it really helps. It really is not that bad.
Once you drank all the sea salt mixture, go and lay down for 30 straight minutes on your right side. This help get the sea salt mixture from the bottom of the stomach to the small intestine that is locate at the lower right side of the stomach. Once the thirty minutes are up. Get up and go about your business. but stay close the bathroom. In about an 1 to 2 hours or sooner for some you will start to eliminate the sea salt mixture.
You may eliminate some solid pieces, but more of a water elimination. This is because the sea salt solution has help soften the hard feces that accumulated in the bowel.
Remember this is safe at anytime. I use it twice a month. I had done wonder for me. It will even help to use during a weight loss program to keep every working.
One thing I forgot in my last comment about the Sea Salt Flush. It is important so I hope you get this comment. I apologize for not including it earlier. Here It is :
YOU can not heat the purified water in the microwave, because it changes the molecular structure of the sea salt solution. I will not work!!! Good Luck!!!! This will help everyone.

Put the one or two teaspoons in a glass of water, stir & leave for an hour or so to soak until properly dissolved, then drink the bitter fluid quickly & wait for about 40 mins for your stomach to really work.
I believe that taking manesiam/ B6 tablets regulary keeps your stomach working, apply the dosage that suits you. Hope this information helps.
